Most of our hunts consistently produce 90-inch and larger bucks, with top areas producing Boone and Crockett 110-inch and much larger bucks annually. If you have not hunted coues deer, you should try it. And if you have, you are probably hooked on it. Coues deer are a specialized desert whitetail found primarily in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico. Antlers on coues deer are much smaller than whitetail deer – a record book coues deer will score 110 inches vs. a whitetail at 170 inches. However, the challenge of chasing them more than makes up for what they lack in size! They are called the gray ghost of the desert for a reason. These desert whitetails are tough to spot with their gray coloration and almost no white on their coats. Ten power binoculars are generally not enough; think 12 to 15 power binos and spotting scopes and plan to spend lots of hours glassing to find that trophy buck. In addition to the challenge of just spotting them, they live in some of the prettiest and most rugged desert terrains in North America. A hunt for coues deer will be both challenging and rewarding.
We offer archery hunts for coues deer, arguably the most challenging archery hunt in North America, targeting water holes and travel corridors. The deer tend to be jumpy and wary, making hunting them with your bow a fun challenge. And for the rifle hunts, plan on longer shots – it’s not uncommon to have shot distances in the 200-500 yard range. The country can tend to be rugged and remote – plan on hiking and glassing, but we have some areas that can be less physical.
We offer hunts in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico south of the border and are always seeking out additional areas and outfitters. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals, types of terrain, food sources, genetics, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good deer. New Mexico has excellent pockets of coues deer in the state’s southwest corner, and our outfitter there knows how to find them. Tags are generally easy to draw, often the first year you apply, and we target 90+ inch bucks, usually a few book 110+ inch deer each year. We have been averaging over 100 inches on this hunt for the last several years. Rifle season is November, a beautiful time to hunt in New Mexico. We hunt rugged public land on these hunts, and our outfitter knows how to find good deer.
Arizona is also known for great coues deer, targeting 90-110 inch deer, with some larger ones taken each year. We have some trophy areas where you can draw tags with 0-3 points. Season dates and locations can vary. Contact us to discuss a strategy for Arizona, and we can help you plan your hunt.
Sonora Mexico is a hunters’ paradise. We harvest some monster coues deer on these hunts – generally, 90-110 inch deer but have taken bucks up to 142 inches on these hunts. We hunt several large, well-managed private ranches. You will arrive in Hermosillo, and our outfitter will drive you to one of our ranches for the hunt. You will use spot and stalk hunting and high rack methods to find your deer, so this is a hunt anyone can do. We offer these hunts from December to February. It is also possible to combo with desert sheep and desert mule deer. Accommodations and food will be excellent.
