New Zealand is known for world-class big game hunting, beautiful scenery, excellent waterfowl hunting, and great fishing. Red stag, tahr, and chamois are the most popular big game species, but most hunters will also pursue other big game such as fallow deer, whitetail, elk, wild rams, sambar deer, sika deer, and rusa stags. World-class fishing for salmon, rainbow trout, and brown trout is sure to be an incredible experience. Adding a few days of waterfowl hunting can be fun. Sightseeing tours are a must-add for both the hunter and traveling companions.
New Zealand hunts can take place in both the North and South Islands. On the North Island, we hunt sambar and sika and rusa stags. On the South Island, where we concentrate most of our hunting activities, we hunt red stag, chamois, tahr, fallow deer, elk, whitetail, and wild ram. Add some fishing or waterfowl hunting to round out your trip. With the spectacular scenery, such as lush green landscapes, glaciers, volcanoes, mountain ranges, waterfalls, fiords, and dense rainforests, you will want to carve out some time for sightseeing. We access the North Island through Christchurch and then drive to the various hunting locations.
Big game hunting typically begins in early March and runs through mid-July. Peak red stag roar is mid-March to mid-April. The fallow deer rut takes place in April, but they are throughout the season. Tahr and chamois rut in May through the middle of June. March is the end of summer. April and May are fall with frosty mornings and warm afternoons. June and July are winter, and it can be cold with a chance of snow.
Fishing takes place from October through April. Waterfowl season is in May.
Our outfitter focuses on free-range hunting with an authentic experience on over 490,000 acres of private land. We focus on red stag, tahr, chamois, elk, and wild ram close to Fairlie on the South Island. Further south, we concentrate on free-range red stag, whitetail, and some world-class fallow deer near Alexandra. And on the North Island, we hunt sambar, sika, and rusa deer. Depending on when you are here on your big game trip, we can also arrange a day or two of fishing or waterfowl hunting.
New Zealand is a family-friendly hunting destination. Non-hunters can have daily touring options. The Moeraki boulders, Steampunk headquarters in Otago, Lake Tepako, Mount Cook, the waterfall walks in Peel Forest, and the quaint towns of Fairlie and Alexandra will keep you enthralled.
Accommodations are close to the hunting areas and very nice, with private suites or 2-room units for groups or families who want to be together. Breakfast every morning, packed lunches for the day (hunting or day touring), and nice hot prepared dinners will ensure you gain a few pounds on your trip.
Travel is straightforward. Land in Christchurch, and the outfitter will pick you up and drive you to the hunt location. It will be a scenic drive you will remember.
We offer several hunting packages, and most trips will be from 4-8 days, allowing ample time to harvest multiple trophies. Hunting red stag in the roar, world-class fallow deer, or chasing tahr and chamois in the high peaks is an experience of a lifetime.
