We love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class central Canadian barren ground caribou and putting our hunters in those camps! They are considered mid-sized caribou with All-Time Boone and Crockett record book animals scoring 360 inches of antler. However, size can vary quite a bit based on where they live throughout their range. That is why it is so important to consider our advice. Our extensive research and outfitter connections can help you find that trophy central Canadian barren ground caribou you have always wanted.
You are hiking to a hilltop to start your morning glassing. Incredibly you see two groups of caribou, both about a mile away but in opposite directions. There are trophy bulls in each group. Oh, the choices you have to make. On another day, you are glassing a river valley and seeing muskox and caribou from your vantage point. Hunting the central Canadian barren ground caribou will take you to some of North America’s most pristine and remote environments.
Central Canadian barren ground caribou have a reasonably wide distribution throughout central Canada and Greenland. They are caribou of the tundra and live on the arctic islands and mainlands of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, parts of northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and the west coast of Greenland. Nunavut and Greenland are where most hunts take place. You can also hunt them in northern Manitoba, but some years, the migration does not get that far south. The hunts in Greenland are arguably the most consistent as the caribou there are largely resident and found in good numbers.
Your hunting day will consist of glassing and stalking caribou herds, looking for a good bull. Archery, muzzleloader, and rifle equipment are all effective, and licenses are outfitter provided. Hunting takes place from August through October typically. Hunts in August and even early September will find bulls in velvet, while hunts in September or later produce hard-horned bulls. It is often possible to add muskox to these hunts.
We offer central Canadian barren ground caribou hunts primarily in Greenland but do have access to a few tags a year in Nunavut. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals, recent population trends and migration patterns, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good caribou. We are passionate caribou hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big caribou on the ground.
The west coast of Greenland holds excellent numbers of resident central Canadian barren ground caribou. Hunts will take place out of several different camps – some are accessed by boat, helicopter, quad, or on foot. August and early September bulls will be in velvet. September and October bulls will be hard horned, and we see nice winter coat white manes fully developed in the second half of September. The terrain is relatively easy to navigate, and we can accommodate anyone on these hunts. These hunts are also excellent to combine with muskox, and hunts for both species are highly successful with nearly 100% opportunity.
Populations of central Canadian barren ground caribou in northern Canada are declining, and migration patterns can change significantly over time. Our outfitters get a few tags annually in this region, though. Bulls are generally not as large as Greenland – a 300-inch bull will be a great one here – but these hunts are a true arctic adventure with native Inuit guides. We can often combine these hunts with muskox.
