While we offer many types of Columbia blacktail deer hunts, we love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class trophy Columbia blacktail deer and putting our hunters in those camps! Many areas and hunts are yielding 120-130+ inch bucks. However, we have some special hunts that produce a high percentage of 135-plus-inch Boone and Crockett animals. Our extensive research and outfitter connections can help you find that trophy Columbia blacktail deer you have always wanted.
Columbia blacktails are found in coastal areas along the West coast from central British Columbia down through Washington, Oregon, and central California. They tend to be very wary, and with the thick cover they prefer, hunting for them is both challenging and rewarding. A smaller cousin of the mule deer, record book trophies will score 135 inches. Typical genetics will be 3×3 and 4×4 bucks, some with eye guards.
The coastal habitat can vary but is generally very thick terrain, usually fairly rugged with ridges and canyons. We hunt thick coastal rainforests, large timber company clearcuts, and some rolling ranches with vineyards. Public and private lands produce great deer, and we target the best areas with the right genetics, food sources, and age structure. You can plan on hunting in some beautiful coastal country wherever you chase these deer.
Hunting methods vary, but we will generally use tree stands and ground blinds over legal bait sites or travel corridors in the early season when deer movement is early and late in the day. During the pre-rut and rut time frames, when deer move well, we like to use hiking and spot and stalk methods to cover more ground and find those big bucks. We will also do some still hunting when the conditions allow for it.
Accommodations range from spike camp set-ups to wall-tents, local hotels, and even nice lodges. Hunts can take place from July to December, and you can use rifles, archery equipment, and muzzleloaders to harvest your deer. We can customize your hunt for you based on your desires.
We offer Columbia blacktail hunts in California, Oregon, and Washington and continually seek out additional areas and outfitters. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals, types of terrain, food sources, genetics, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good deer. We are passionate deer hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big buck on the ground.
We have access to several private ranches in North and Central California that are well-managed for trophy deer. Seasons start in July for archery and run August through September for rifle hunts. Tags are over the counter so planning this hunt is super easy. Combining this hunt with hogs or even a tule elk is often possible. Deer on most properties will run in the 90-120 inch class, but we also have some properties managed for huge deer, 130+ inches, for those looking for the deer of a lifetime. These are beautiful areas to bring a spouse along as there is quite a lot to see and do in California wine country.
Oregon is an excellent choice for a Columbia blacktail hunt. The outfitters we work with hunt public and private lands and put their work in to find you great deer. Most trophy bucks will score 100-130 inches, and we take several Boone and Crockett record book deer every season. Archery hunts are done in September and again in November and December, and these tags are over the counter. Rifle tags are also over the counter, and those hunts occur in October and November. Muzzleloader hunts take place at the peak of the rut in November and December and often produce the biggest deer of the year. We offer guaranteed tags for the muzzleloader hunts, or you can build points to draw the tag. Hunting methods for all hunts can vary from lots of hiking with spot and stalk to sitting over food sources, which allows us to accommodate anyone on these hunts. Combining these hunts with black bears or Roosevelt elk is sometimes possible.
Washington produces some great Columbia blacktail deer. Over-the-counter tags are available for the general season, but there is quite a lot of competition on public lands, so we don’t recommend general season hunts. However, if you can draw a quality/premium tag or have a raffle/auction tag, we have some excellent hunts available and can put you in touch with our best outfitters.
