The Shiras moose is one of three species of moose in North America. Their name comes from George Shiras III, who first described this moose while exploring Yellowstone National Park in the early 1900s. They generally have the smallest body weight and antler spreads of the three species. Found in parts of Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah in the lower 48 and southeast British Columbia and southwest Alberta in Canada, bulls will have spreads from 35-50 inches. Tags are difficult to draw in the lower 48, but special tags are available in some areas. In Canada, outfitters have tags, so it’s often easier to plan a hunt there rather than wait years to draw one in the US.
These moose tend to live in higher mountainous terrain than the other moose species. Archery, muzzleloader, and rifle hunts are available. Horseback, on-foot, truck, and ATV access are all used. Accommodations can vary from wall tents to nice lodges. If you are trying to harvest your moose slam or all North American 29 big game species, you must hunt Shiras moose.
We offer Shiras moose hunts in British Columbia and Utah with guaranteed tags. We also offer hunts in Utah, Washington, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado if you are fortunate enough to draw a tag. We work with Utah outfitters with a long-standing track record of producing great bulls. These hunts are done with guaranteed CWMU tags (landowner tags) and must be booked well in advance. Hunts occur in September and October with the weapon of your choice. Bulls typically have antler spreads between 35 and 50 inches, and success rates are near 100%.
Southeast British Columbia has some excellent Shiras moose hunting. Antler spreads will be 40-50 inches, and some bulls up to 55 inches have been taken. Tags are guaranteed. Archery hunts are in September, and we will use calling to lure that bull in close. Rifle hunts will take place in October and early November, with glassing and spot and stalk being the primary methods. Depending on the weather, you can find shiras moose on both river bottoms or higher elevations. Be prepared for hunting off horseback or on foot, depending on the conditions. Generally, these hunts are not extremely physical, and we can cater the trip to anyone. With success rates usually around 80+%, these are great hunts you can combine with deer, black bear, or elk.
