We love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class mountain goats and putting our hunters in those camps! Mountain goat hunts are typically some of the most physical hunts you can find in North America, but we have boat-based options that are somewhat less physical. No matter the size, every goat is a hard-earned trophy, but we hunt areas that produce Boone and Crockett record book animals and have some later season hunts when hair quality will be incredible. So whether you are looking for long hair or big horns, or both, we have a hunt for you. With our extensive research and outfitter connections, we can help you find that trophy mountain goat you have always wanted.
Imagine you and your guide spotting that white billy bedded on a high perch in vertical terrain. You start planning a stalk to get into position to intercept him when he comes down to feed. How about being on a nice dry boat cruising the Alaska coastline? You spot a late-season long-haired billy in a rutting area with his nannies only 500 feet above sea level, slip the boat in the water and make your way to shore for a short climb. Or you harvested your goat after an all-day 3,000-foot climb. Unfortunately, he is resting on a precarious outcropping, and you must tie him off to get him skinned and quartered. You proceed off the mountain, heavily loaded, knowing you will make it to your tent well after dark. No matter how you hunt, you will always earn your goat. You will know it was worthwhile when you see those sleek jet black horns and that beautiful white coat.
Mountain goats are hunted widely throughout North America. They live in southern Alaska, parts of the Yukon and Northwest Territories, extensively throughout British Columbia, and specific ranges in Alberta, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah. They inhabit some of the steepest mountains you will find in North America. Trophy billies will often carry horns in the 9-11 inch range and be seven plus years old. The hair quality on mountain goats often is the feature that most people comment on when seeing one in your trophy room. Later season goats have incredibly long hair, chaps, and beautiful beards.
Many hunts will be backpack based, and you will be traversing some vertical country, with some big climbs on foot seeking your trophy. Others will utilize horseback to get into good goat country, and final stalks will always be on foot. And boat-based hunts will be the least physical but will still require some climbing for final stalks.
Accommodations will vary from base camp cabins to lightweight backpacking camps to excellent accommodations on boats where you can recharge every evening.
Hunts will typically take place from August to December, but the timing can vary depending on the location. Also, early season hunts produce goats with shorter hair but typically have better weather, while hunts from late September and on will produce goats with long hair, but you could be dealing with more snow.
In some areas, it is possible to do mixed bag hunting for other species like caribou, moose, and sheep. Tags in Alaska and the Canadian hunts are over-the-counter or outfitter provided. Tags for hunts in the lower 48 go through a draw process and can be challenging to get.
We offer mountain goat hunts in Alaska and British Columbia. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals, recent population trends, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good mountain goats. Goat populations are high in the areas we hunt, and hunters who physically and mentally prepare themselves usually experience near 100% shooting opportunities barring any severe weather. We take Boone and Crockett mountain goats on these hunts every year. We are passionate mountain goat hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a trophy mountain goat on the ground.
We hunt several areas of coastal Alaska. Remote backpack and fly-out hunts can take place from August through October. Proper physical and mental preparation is the key to success, as you will need to be able to traverse some technical and vertical terrain on these hunts. We also offer boat-based hunts in coastal Alaska. These hunts are more expensive than the backpack hunts but are less physical with nicer creature comforts and whole foods versus freeze-dried foods and mountaineering tents. These hunts can occur as late as November or December when the goats are rutting and snow has pushed them closer to sea level.
We hunt several areas in northern British Columbia. Remote backpack and fly-out hunts are available and can take place from August through October. Proper physical and mental preparation is the key to success, as you need to be able to traverse some technical and vertical terrain on these hunts. We also offer several horseback-based mountain goat hunts. Slightly less physical than the backpack hunts, you will still need to make your stalk on foot to get into position for a shot. These hunts are also excellent for combining with mountain caribou, Canadian moose, and stone sheep.
