Harvesting all four native species of North American sheep – the dall, stone, rocky mountain, and desert is a lifelong pursuit for many who have accomplished it or are pursuing it. There is also the aoudad, or barbary sheep, an introduced species that are incredibly fun to hunt and more affordable. From our personal experience, you either have the sheep bug, or you don’t. If you do, it will take you to some of the most majestic mountainous habitats in North America, chasing some incredible creatures. There is nothing like hunting sheep!
Dall sheep, typically all white-colored, are generally the most affordable of the four native North American sheep to hunt. They are found extensively throughout Alaska and parts of British Columbia, Northwest Territories, and Yukon Territories. Their numbers are generally strong throughout their range, and tag availability is good. To learn more about our trophy-class dall sheep hunts, click here.
Stone sheep are generally dark in color and have lighter necks and faces. Their coloration and beautiful full curl horns are a sight to behold, and many view a stone sheep as the finest sheep trophy in North America. They are most commonly found and hunted in northern British Columbia and live in parts of the Yukon Territories. To learn more about our trophy-class stone sheep hunts, click here.
Two types of sheep qualify for the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep of your grand slam – the Rocky Mountain bighorn and the California bighorn. The majestic Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep is North America’s largest-bodied sheep with massive horns. They live in western Canada and several western US states. The California bighorn sheep is slightly smaller and lives in British Columbia and a few western US states. To learn more about our trophy-class Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep hunts, click here.
There are three huntable types of desert bighorn sheep in North America – the desert bighorn sheep (nelsoni), the Mexican desert bighorn sheep (mexicanna), and the South Baja desert bighorn sheep (weemsi). They all count as desert bighorn sheep for your grand slam. The desert mountain ranges they call home in Mexico and the southwestern US are stunningly beautiful, as are the sheep. Aoudad, also known as barbary sheep, are native to North Africa. They were introduced in Texas in the 1950s and have now spread throughout Texas and parts of New Mexico. Populations are robust, and there are now more aoudad sheep in North America than in their native land. These hunts are a fraction of the cost of the other North American sheep hunts and will give you an authentic sheep hunting experience.
