Aoudad, also known as barbary sheep, are native to North Africa. They were introduced in Texas in the 1950s and have now spread throughout Texas and parts of New Mexico. Populations are robust, and there are now more aoudad sheep in North America than in their native land. These sheep like to live in rugged, broken habitats but sometimes inhabit gentler terrain. Hunts generally occur from September to March but can take place year-round. Rut timing is typically in September and October in most areas. And the best news – they are a fraction of the cost of the other North American sheep hunts and will give you an authentic sheep hunting experience.
Hunts can vary quite a bit on the level of physicality required – but regardless of what you are capable of – we can hunt almost anyone on an aoudad sheep hunt. Accommodations can vary from cabins to excellent lodges. We can use ATVs, side-by-sides, trucks, and on foot for access. Shots can vary from 150-400+ yards or more. These sheep are tough; we recommend .300 class calibers with controlled expansion bullets. We can often accommodate up to 6 or even eight hunters on these hunts, making an off-season hunt with a group of friends an outstanding possibility to cure your winter blues.
An aoudad sheep makes a stunning mount with heavy sweeping horns, beautiful coats, and long-haired chaps. Success rates on all aoudad hunts are typically near 100% shooting opportunity.
We offer aoudad sheep hunts in Texas and New Mexico. Our outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals on their ranches and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good sheep. We are passionate sheep hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big sheep on the ground.
We work with several outfitters, primarily located in West Texas. Here, aoudad sheep are considered an exotic species. You can hunt them year-round and tags are not required. September and October hunts are during the rut and are perfect if you prefer warmer weather. We do some hunting in November and December but usually focus on whitetail or mule deer hunts during this time. Then January through March hunts kick in – weather will be much cooler now, and we find groups of bachelor rams in some rougher country. We can customize all of these hunts to the level of physicality you and your group would like. Accommodations can vary from cabins to 5-star lodges, and we can handle larger groups. All hunts are free-range fair-chase for wild aoudad sheep on well-managed private ranches ranging from 10,000 to over 150,000 acres. Sheep horn length will run from 28-34 inches, with most over 30 inches and some properties averaging 32-33 inches annually. It is often possible to add other species during these hunts as well.
Hunts take place in October, December, January, and February on large private ranches with guaranteed landowner tags. Sheep here will be in the 28-32 inch class. These large private properties have great road systems, the terrain is generally rolling canyons, and we can accommodate anyone on these hunts.
