While we offer many types of dall sheep hunts, we love finding those incredible locations throughout North America for world-class trophy dall sheep and putting our hunters in those camps! In our book, any older age-class dall sheep ram is a trophy as you will earn yours with some blood, sweat, and tears. With that said, sheep populations can go up and down in an area based on many factors such as disease, predation, brutal winters, and hunting pressure. Our top outfitters have an excellent track record of finding legal rams each year, and we focus on areas with great genetics and age structure to give you the best chance to take a ram of a lifetime. We hunt areas that produce that elusive 40-plus inch Boone and Crockett ram. Our extensive research and outfitter connections can help you find that trophy dall sheep you have always wanted.
Imagine glassing across a braided glacial river and seeing a band of rams 3 miles away. Then, 5 hours and 2000 feet of elevation gain later, you are perched on a shale rim, looking at the ram of your dreams from 250 yards away. On another hunt, you must be patient and watch a 40-inch ram for five days until he gets to a location where you can make a successful stalk. How about doing a 2-hour climb before daybreak and poking along a spine ridge, glassing every crevice, when suddenly you spot a bedded ram 60 yards below you, unaware of your presence? Or maybe you had the opportunity to watch a large group of ewes and lambs feeding in an open meadow with a bomber ram bedded, looking down from above. These experiences are why we hunt these sheep in the mountain ranges they call home.
Dall sheep, typically all white-colored, are generally the most affordable of the four native North American sheep to hunt. Their range includes most major mountain ranges in Alaska, the far northwest corner of British Columbia, the Mackenzie mountains of the Northwest Territories, and parts of northern and western Yukon Territories. In general, their numbers are strong throughout their range. Tags are primarily over the counter in Alaska, with some premium units requiring a random draw. Tags in Canada are outfitter provided.
All sheep hunts are physical – proper physical and mental preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a successful hunt. We can tell you how to prepare appropriately for these hunts. Many hunts are backpack hunts covering drainages on foot with camp on your back. Others are on horseback to help cover ground, but the final approach will always be on foot. Camps will most often be remote spike-out set-ups, with freeze-dried foods being the norm. These hunts take place in some wonderful mountain country, and you will often see other animals like grizzly bears, caribou, moose, and wolves. Trophy rams typically have 35-38 inch curls, but we harvest 40+ inch rams on these hunts. Light rifles and longer shots – most in the 100-400 yard range are typical.
We offer dall sheep hunts in Alaska and Canada. Our locations and outfitters are carefully selected based on the quality and quantity of animals, recent population trends, methods of access, and the outfitters’ track record of putting our hunters on good sheep. We are passionate sheep hunters here at Infinity Hunts and understand what it takes to get a big sheep on the ground.
We hunt the major mountain ranges in Alaska that hold sheep – the Talkeetna, Chugach, Alaska Range, and the Brooks Range. Seasons start August 10 and go through September 20 in most areas. Horseback and backpack hunts in the Talkeetnas with over-the-counter tags. Horseback and backpack hunts in the Chugach Range; if you can draw a premier trophy area tag – we can help with this. Backpack hunts in the Alaska Range – our outfitter has some great pockets of sheep. And truly remote Brooks Range hunts on the north slope near the arctic ocean, where most sheep die of old age. Our outfitters hunt areas with minimal resident pressure due to more difficult access. On some sheep hunts, you can harvest brown/grizzly bear, caribou, moose, and wolf on a trophy fee basis. Alaska is generally more affordable than the hunts in Canada, and we send most of our hunters to Alaska.
We do offer a few select hunts in Canada for dall sheep. Often these are horseback-based hunts, with the final stalk on foot. Tags are guaranteed, and the outfitters have expansive concessions that they manage very well for age structure. Often these hunts are combined with other species such as mountain caribou or moose.
